What does it mean if there is a Security Interest on a vehicle?
If your search shows that no security interest is registered on the PPSR, on a search you do on the day you are picking a vehicle up, there is no money owing or encumbrances on the vehicle and you would be okay to take the vehicle.
If your search shows that a security interest is registered on the PPSR, on a search you do on the day you are picking a vehicle up, there is money owing or financial encumbrances on the vehicle. If the seller does not pay out the debt to the finance company, there is a good chance the finance company will come and take the vehicle off you. You could potentially lose all of your money.
How do I query the details of a Registered Security Interest?
Usually the finance company contact details are listed on the PPSR certificate. You should contact them to ask if there is still money owing on the vehicle. If you tell them you are buying the vehicle, they will usually advise if there is money outstanding. Due to privacy laws they won’t tell you any further information.
What other information does my certificate show?
Your PPSR certificate also provides information from the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS). NEVDIS is a national database of all registered vehicles in Australia, compiled from data provided by state and territory road agencies.
This information will help check the accuracy of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), Engine Number and Current Registration status. It also gives you any data held on NEVDIS about whether the vehicle is stolen or has been previously written-off.
Why didn’t my search contain NEVDIS additional vehicle data?
View the ‘If you see ‘No NEVDIS data is returned for the serial number you entered’, that means that the VIN is not recorded on NEVDIS. Double check that you have entered the VIN correctly. Otherwise it might mean that the vehicle has never or not recently been registered.
Double check the VIN against the registration papers. If they match, contact the seller who can ask the road transport authority to investigate further.
How do I know the vehicle is currently registered?
View the ‘State Vehicle Registered’ and ‘Registration Expiry’ fields to locate details of the vehicle’s registration status. It is also a good idea to ask to view a copy of the current registration papers to confirm the current registered owner of the vehicle.
Should I keep a copy of my PPSR search certificate?
VWe email a copy of your search certificate to you. Keep this on file and print out a hard copy to keep as well. Your search number can be used to retrieve a copy your certificate from PPSR a any time. Your search certificate can also be used as evidence in any dispute or legal matter.
